Laser Treatment
Changes associated with ageing and sun exposure, such as fine lines, pigmentation and uneven texture, are suitable for treatment with carbon dioxide laser.
Other conditions that can be treated with laser resurfacing are acne scars, chickenpox scars and superficial precancerous lesions called keratoses.
Before Procedure
Dr Moko will assess whether laser resurfacing is appropriate for you. Certain conditions may require precautions. These include:
- Dark skin types
- History of keloid scars
- History of ‘cold sores’
- Previous laser treatment, chemical peel, dermabrasion
- Certain medications eg roaccutane for acne, contraceptive pill, antibiotics
Photographs will be taken before and after your procedure for planning and to record your results.
Procedure
Laser resurfacing with carbon dioxide is carried out by Dr Moko under local anaesthetic with sedation or general anaesthetic.
The carbon dioxide vaporizes the epidermis or top layer of skin. Further passes of the laser beam will vaporize deeper layers.
By controlling power, spot size and cool time, ablation of the skin can be controlled precisely.
After Procedure
For the first 48 hours after treatment, your face will be red, swell and weep like any burn.
You will need to apply ointment frequently to prevent scab and crust formation.
It takes about 5-7 days for the skin to heal. The skin is usually pink or red for 6-8 weeks, but occasionally the pinkness can last several months.
You can return to work after 2 weeks. Dr Moko’s nurses will assist you with camouflage makeup if necessary.
